Adventures Under the Hood |
The Knock Sensor is located in the intake manifold
just forward of the carburetor, buried under hoses and
wires. It's really nothing more than a microphone, tuned
to a narrow band around 5 KHz.When knocking, pinging,
detonation, or whatever you like to call it occurs, the
sensor picks up the characteristic sound and feeds it to
the computer, which retards the timing in an attempt to
stop it.
You can observe this by knocking on the intake
manifold next to the sensor while watching the timing
mark with a timing light.
